Which motorcycle insurance should you choose?

Two different types of insurance may be relevant for a motorcycle: compulsory civil liability insurance and Casco insurance for the motorcycle itself.

Compulsory MTPL insurance

Compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance covers damage caused to other persons for which the motorcycle operator is liable.

You can compare offers and purchase insurance online for a period of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. The Green Card is provided at no extra cost.

Casco insurance

Casco insurance is designed to protect the motorcycle itself—for example, against damage in a traffic accident, theft, fire, or vandalism.

You can calculate the cost of comprehensive motorcycle insurance online. Insurers assess motorcycles more cautiously, so not all of them provide quotes.

What types of vehicles can be insured?

In the same way, not only motorcycles are prohibited, but also other registered bicycles and four-wheeled vehicles – mopeds, scooters and four-wheelers.

Motorcycles

Road, touring, sports, cruiser, enduro, and other registered motorcycles.

A motorcycle license plate consists of 3 digits and 2 letters, e.g., 000XX.

Mopeds and scooters

Registered mopeds and scooters participating in public traffic – including those ridden only within the city or on a seasonal basis.

A moped’s registration number consists of 2 digits and 3 letters, e.g., 00XXX.

ATVs

Registered ATVs used on roads, on the farm, or for leisure.

The license plate of the powerful quad bike consists of 2 digits and 2 letters, e.g., 00XX.

Insurers assess Casco coverage for ATVs on an individual basis, so not all of them may provide a quote.

Motorcycle Casco insurance

Casco is voluntary insurance designed to protect the motorcycle itself against unexpected damage, destruction, or loss.

Unlike compulsory insurance, it covers damage to your own motorcycle based on the selected terms—even when you caused the accident.

Against which risks is it possible to get insured?

Depending on the insurer and the chosen insurance option, coverage may include traffic accidents, overturning, theft, fire, vandalism, natural events, or other sudden and unexpected damage to the motorcycle.

Specific risks and exclusions depend on the chosen insurer and the terms of the insurance.

Why do not all insurers provide a quote?

Insurers view the risks associated with motorcycles, mopeds, and quad bikes differently than those associated with cars; consequently, some do not offer Casco insurance for these vehicles, while others assess each case individually.

Therefore, the calculator may show fewer offers than for a car, and sometimes – none at all.

What determines the insurer's decision?

For insurers, the motorcycle’s type and power, value, year of manufacture, the rider’s age and experience, storage conditions, and claims history are usually important.

Each insurer makes the decision to insure and the price according to its own rules.

If the calculator did not provide an offer, write to us – we will try to find an insurer that agrees to insure your motorcycle.

What determines the cost of motorcycle insurance?

The cost of motorcycle insurance depends on the type of insurance chosen, the motorcycle itself, its riders, and the insurance period.

Cost of compulsory insurance

Insurers calculate the cost of compulsory insurance based on their own risk assessment models. Factors such as the motorcycle type and engine power, the rider’s age and experience, place of residence, and accident history can be significant.

The period also has an influence. A 12-month policy usually costs little more than 6 months, and you don’t have to worry about running out of coverage before the season.

Comprehensive car insurance cost

The cost of comprehensive motorcycle insurance depends primarily on the motorcycle itself: its type, make and model, value, year of manufacture, storage conditions, selected risks, and the deductible amount.

Since not all insurers provide quotes, it is worth comparing the ones you do receive—their prices and terms can vary significantly.

What is needed for motorcycle insurance?

The required information depends on the type of insurance you choose.

For compulsory MTPL insurance

If the motorcycle is registered in Lithuania, the simplest way to start the calculation is with its license plate number.

You will also need to indicate the age and driving experience of the youngest driver. If they are specified inaccurately, the insurer may demand the return of the payment or part of it in the event of damage.

For Casco insurance

In addition to registration details, you will usually need to provide the motorcycle’s value, information about where it is kept and the security measures in place, as well as its history of previous claims.

Depending on the insurer, you may also be asked for photos of the motorcycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about compulsory and Casco insurance for motorcycles, mopeds, and quad bikes.

When is motorcycle insurance mandatory?

Compulsory civil liability insurance is required for all registered motorcycles participating in public traffic.

Even if you only ride during the season, insurance must be valid for the entire time you use the motorcycle.

A motorcycle can be insured for a period of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. Most motorcyclists choose seasonal insurance.

However, it is worth considering a 12-month policy—the cost usually differs little from a 6-month one, and the coverage won’t expire unexpectedly if the season runs long.

We recommend arranging insurance in advance, before the season begins.

Then, on the first warm day, you’ll be able to head out right away—the insurance will already be in effect.

No. When you purchase compulsory insurance through “Man ramu,” the Green Card is provided automatically and at no extra cost.

Yes, you can calculate the price of a Casco motorcycle online. However, not all motorcycle insurers offer Casco and some may refuse to insure a particular motorcycle.

If the calculator did not provide an offer, please email us – we will try to help.

It’s worth a try – the calculation is done the same way as for a motorcycle.

Insurers assess quads and mopeds on an individual basis; consequently, there may be fewer offers available, or none at all.

When drawing up the contract, specify the age and driving experience of the youngest driver.

Mandatory insurance remains valid regardless of who is riding the motorcycle. However, if the group of riders was specified inaccurately, the insurer—after paying compensation to the injured party—may demand reimbursement of the payout or a portion thereof.

Insurance can be purchased, but it is forbidden to use a motorcycle in public traffic without a valid technical inspection.

In such a case, the contract would remain valid, but in the event of a traffic accident, the insurer could demand reimbursement of the amounts paid to the injured parties.
