Travel insurance
Travel insurance provides financial protection during your trip—covering everything from unexpected medical expenses to risks involving luggage, accidents, or civil liability. Compare offers and choose your coverage.
What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to reduce the risk of unexpected expenses while traveling. Depending on the chosen coverage, it may include necessary medical expenses and repatriation, accidents, civil liability, loss of or damage to luggage, and other risks offered by the insurer.
It is important not to choose based on price alone—consider the travel destination, planned activities, coverage limits, exclusions, and the specific protections relevant to you.
How to choose travel insurance?
Travel insurance consists of several separate coverages. These can be combined according to the nature of the trip—it is not necessary to select all of them.
Medical expenses and repatriation
- Emergency medical care, medicines, and transportation
- Repatriacija į Lietuvą, jei gydymas tęsiamas namuose
- 24-hour support service
- The most important protection on almost every trip
Accident insurance
- Benefit for injury, disability, or death during the trip
- Operates independently of treatment costs.
- Relevant for active leisure and sports
Civil liability
- Damage you accidentally cause to others while traveling
- Damaged hotel or rental property
- Legal defense costs
Baggage insurance
- Baggage delay, loss, or damage
- Purchase of essential items due to baggage delay
- Relevant for connecting flights
What should you look for when choosing travel insurance?
Price is just one factor. Policies from different insurers may offer varying levels of coverage for a similar price, so review these points before making a choice.
- Travel destination and territory. Check whether the coverage applies in all the countries you will be visiting, including transit stops.
- Amount of medical expenses. For long-distance travel and destinations with high medical costs, the minimum limit is often insufficient.
- Planned activities. Skiing, diving, climbing, and riding a scooter are generally not included in standard coverage.
- Non-insured events. It is precisely this section of the rules that most distinguishes the proposals.
- Deduction. At what amount does compensation for damages begin?
- Age limits. Some insurers apply different conditions or coverage amounts for older travelers.

EHIC and travel insurance — what each covers
The most common question is: why do I need travel insurance if I already have a European Health Insurance Card? And vice versa. The answer is simple: these products serve different purposes. While there is some overlap, they do not replace each other.
| EHIC | Travel Insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| Valid in | EU and EEA countries, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom | within the selected travel area. |
| In which institutions? | Only state-owned | State-owned and private |
| Under what conditions? | The same as for local residents. | Subject to the terms and limits of the policy. |
| Repatriation to Lithuania | Not covered | Covered |
| Accommodation and new travel expenses: | Not covered | /May be covered |
| Baggage and civil liability | |Not covered | |May be covered |
| Price | :Free | /Depends on the trip |
What the EHIC can cover better
- The treatment of chronic diseases, which travel insurance often excludes
- Treatment following activities not covered by the policy
- Cases involving the use of alcohol or substances
- Regarding pregnancy-related situations—travel insurance coverage here is usually very limited.
Therefore, when traveling around Europe, it is worth having both rather than choosing just one.
Where the EHIC ends
- It applies only up to the limits of the state health system.
- Once treated, you are discharged—but plans, reservations, or travel companions may have already left.
- Accommodation, new tickets, and even clothing remain your responsibility.
- Repatriation costs can run into the tens of thousands, and the logistics would have to be organized independently.
An important detail. Some insurers merely recommend having an EHIC, while others make it a mandatory requirement. Under some plans, coverage applies only to treatment received at a public healthcare facility. Therefore, before traveling, it is worth both obtaining an EHIC and checking what your policy terms say about it.
How assistance abroad works in practice
The policy states that expenses will be covered. In reality, however, the process spanning from the initial claim to the actual reimbursement involves steps worth knowing about in advance—knowing them saves both time and stress.
What is a payment guarantee?
- Private clinics may request a large deposit or payment immediately after the service.
- The assistance service can try to provide a payment guarantee to the clinic on your behalf.
- In that case, you do not need to pay the bill yourself.
- However, not every private clinic accepts a guarantee from every assistance service.
- The coordination process may take time, even if the request is made immediately.
Why is a public hospital sometimes suggested?
- It sometimes happens that, even after all arrangements have been made, a private clinic refers a patient to a state facility because the necessary specialist is unavailable at the time.
- The quality of care in public hospitals in Europe is high.
- Avoiding them simply because they are state-run can prolong treatment.
- In more complex cases, a medical board is convened at the state hospital.
When to call, and when to act immediately. In a genuine emergency, the hospital makes life-saving decisions, and the paperwork is handled later—seconds matter more than paperwork.
But when there is time, it is worth cooperating. Refusal to provide medical documentation on the grounds that “I have insurance after all” usually results in being asked to pay for it yourself and submit the documentation later for evaluation. There are established procedures to approve more expensive or invasive treatments, and an insurer cannot rely on the client’s or clinic’s word alone.
The practical recommendation is simple: keep the assistance service number both on your phone and printed on paper, call immediately, and save all documents and invoices from the very first visit.
Kur galioja kelionių draudimas?
Choose your insurance coverage area based on all the countries you will visit during your trip—including transit stops if you leave the airport. Different insurers define coverage areas differently, so check what is included in a specific option before making your choice.
- Europe. It usually covers the EU, the EEA, and neighboring countries, but the lists vary.
- All world. Broader coverage, often with separate terms for North America.
- Exceptions. In some countries, coverage may not apply due to war, instability, or official travel advisories against visiting.
- Transit. If you stop over for more than a few hours and leave the airport, that country becomes part of the journey.
Before embarking on a long journey, it is worth checking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ recommendations for the specific country. If travel is not recommended, insurance coverage in that country may be invalid, even if you hold a policy.
What determines the cost of travel insurance?
There is no single price; it is calculated separately for each trip. The biggest factors are the duration of the trip, the destination, and the age of the travelers.
- Duration of the trip. Every day increases the risk and the cost.
- Direction. Distant countries and those with high treatment costs are subject to higher rates than Europe.
- The age of Travelers. The second most important factor.
- Number of travelers. Multiple people can be insured in a single order.
- Selected risks and amounts. Medical limit, baggage, civil liability.
- Planned activities. Active leisure is evaluated separately.
- Insurer’s rate. The price of the same trip can vary several-fold between different insurers—so it is worth comparing.
Active leisure and sports
If you plan to go skiing, diving, mountain climbing, ride a scooter, or engage in other active pursuits during your trip, standard coverage usually does not include them. You need to specify these activities when taking out the policy.
Activities most frequently excluded from coverage
- Skiing and snowboarding
- Scuba diving
- Mountain climbing and multi-day hikes
- Riding a scooter or motorcycle
- Water sports, rafting, paragliding
- Parachuting
What to check in the rules
- Whether the activity is included or merely similar to an included one
- Is there an altitude limit for mountain routes?
- Is off-piste skiing covered?
- What documents are required when driving a vehicle?
- Are protective equipment required, such as a helmet?

What should you do if an insured event occurs?
If you require urgent medical assistance, prioritize your safety and health first. Contact the assistance service specified in your policy as soon as possible.
1
Call emergency services.
The number is listed on the insurance certificate. The service operates around the clock and helps you choose a medical facility.
2
Follow the instructions.
The service can contact the clinic directly and attempt to provide a payment guarantee.
3
Collaborate on documents
When time permits, please submit the requested medical documents—without them, it is impossible to approve more expensive treatment.
4

Medical reports, prescriptions, and receipts. Submit them to the insurer upon your return.
If you had to pay for it yourselves. This happens when the situation was urgent or the clinic did not accept a payment guarantee. In such a case, keep absolutely all documents and submit them to the insurer upon your return—expenses are assessed according to the terms of the policy.

Does travel insurance cover active activities (skiing, diving, etc.)?
If you plan to engage in active recreation (skiing, diving, mountain climbing, sports), it is necessary to carefully read the risk descriptions and the rules of the specific insurer and make sure that your planned activity falls within the scope of insurance. It is necessary to choose the appropriate risk option before concluding a contract, otherwise the insurance company may refuse to pay the insurance benefit.
