Trauma, disability, or loss can cost you not only your health but also your income. This insurance pays out a lump sum when the unexpected happens, helping you until you get back to your normal routine.
When your income depends on your ability to work, even a few weeks of incapacity are felt immediately.
Organized training sessions and competitions are a common cause of injuries, yet coverage typically extends only to specifically designated sports risks.
Injuries among children occur at school, during sports training, or in the yard. Insurers typically offer specific terms for children and students up to the age of 25.
There is no employer to compensate for the downtime. The payment helps cover what the sickness benefit does not.
This type of insurance works differently than the reimbursement of medical expenses. You do not need to collect invoices or prove how much you spent. The payout is calculated as a percentage of the selected sum insured, with the specific percentage determined by the nature of the injury according to the insurer’s injury schedule.
In the event of death, the full sum selected for this risk is typically paid out, whereas in the event of disability or loss of working capacity, a portion of that sum is paid based on the established level.
If the injury insurance coverage amount is €10,000 and the schedule specifies a rate of 3% for a rib fracture, the payout will be €300. If multiple different injuries are sustained, the payouts are usually aggregated.
The amount is not a limit up to which someone will reimburse the bills. This is the number from which the percentage is calculated, so the higher the amount, the bigger each payout.
The options and terminology vary by insurer. Please note that medical expenses are handled differently than other risks, as they reimburse treatment costs substantiated by financial documentation rather than a percentage of the sum insured.
The size of the premium is determined not by age, but by daily activities. Insurers divide activities into groups, and the premium depends on the group. Grouping varies by insurer; below is one of the divisions used in the market to make the principle clear.
Administrative, scientific, or research work; educators; medical personnel; managers; employees in retail and food service establishments; beauty salon and personal service workers; entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals; cultural and arts professionals.
Drivers—including long-haul drivers—agricultural and gas station workers, light industry and manufacturing specialists, security personnel, watchmen, veterinary staff, interior repair specialists, and warehouse workers. Non-working individuals and pensioners are also often included in this group.
For children and students up to 25 years of age, insurers usually apply separate conditions and variants of their insurance amounts.
A working student. If you are employed, your group is usually determined by your employment rather than your studies.
Homemaker, person temporarily out of work, pensioner. That is exactly what you should indicate. This does not automatically mean the lowest premium, but it is the correct answer that allows the insurer to select the appropriate option.
Work at heights or with heavy machinery is typically assessed separately and does not fall into the light physical work category.
As with sports, some professions or activities are not covered by insurers or have individual terms and conditions. Specifying the activity accurately is not important for the premium, but for the benefit: if the event is related to an undeclared activity, the insurer has a reason to dispute it.
In the context of insurance, “sport” refers not to the physical exertion involved, but to the organizational framework. Engaging in sport is typically understood as participating in activities, training sessions, or competitions organized by a sports organization. Sports organizations are generally considered to be legal entities such as sports clubs, centers, schools, federations, associations, and societies.
Training sessions and competitions at a sports club, school, or federation, including amateur leagues and children’s sports groups.
Activities for health-improvement purposes, activities that are part of an educational curriculum, and leisure activities—provided they do not involve participation in competitions or marathons and do not constitute high-risk leisure activities.
Sports are usually grouped according to the risk they pose to health. The grouping varies by insurer, but the logic is similar: activities such as running, swimming or racquet sports are considered the least risky; moderate, such as bicycle racing, equestrian sports or rowing; team sports and gymnastics are usually considered more risky, and combat and contact sports are considered the highest risk.
What does this mean in practice? If you engage in organized sports, you must declare this. Coverage is then extended, and a surcharge is added to the premium; the insurer determines the amount based on the type of sport and its risk category. If the sport is not declared, coverage typically does not apply during training sessions or competitions.
Insurers do not cover certain activities. This applies to certain sports, professions, and leisure activities. Professional athletes are not excluded by this restriction. The insurer determines whether a specific activity is acceptable, so it is best to specify it immediately when submitting an inquiry.
