What is Casco insurance?

Casco insurance is voluntary vehicle insurance that covers losses resulting from damage to, destruction of, or theft of your own car—based on the risks specified in the contract—including instances where you caused the traffic accident.

In Lithuania, Casco insurance is not mandatory, though it is often required by leasing companies and banks. Each insurer defines the scope of coverage, the deductible, and additional services in its own terms and conditions, so quotes with similar prices can differ significantly.

Casco insurance

Voluntary. Protects your car – covers repair or loss costs based on the selected risks, even if you caused the incident.

The price and scope of coverage are determined by the vehicle, the drivers, the deductible, and the selected additional protections.

Compulsory MTPL insurance

Mandatory by law. It covers damages you cause to other people, their property, or their health while driving.

Compulsory insurance does not cover damage to your own vehicle if you caused the traffic accident.

What does Casco insurance cover?

The exact scope of coverage is determined by the specific insurer’s rules and the chosen insurance option. Typically, Casco insurance covers the following risks:

Traffic accidents

Collision with another vehicle, obstacle or other object, overturning, driving off the road, entering a pothole.

Compensation is also provided if you caused the traffic accident.

Theft and robbery

Theft, robbery, or attempted theft of the vehicle or its parts.

It is important to comply with the insurer’s requirements regarding keys, documents, and anti-theft measures.

Shattering glass

Damage to the windshield and other windows, headlights, or mirrors – for example, from a flying stone.

Some insurers do not apply a deductible for glass repair or replacement at a partner service center.

Natural phenomena

Storm, hail, downpour, flood, lightning or a tree falling on the car.

Collision with an animal

Collision with a wild animal, bird, or domestic animal.

Some insurers do not apply a deductible in such cases.

Fire and vandalism

Fire, explosion, and intentional damage by third parties.

Damage sustained in a parking lot is also usually compensated for, even when the party at fault is unknown.

What does Casco insurance not cover?

Even the most comprehensive Casco insurance does not cover all losses. Exclusions vary by insurer, but typically, the following are not covered:

Faults and wear

Casco insurance is not a warranty or maintenance insurance.

Mechanical and electronic failures, normal wear and tear, or the consequences of improper use are generally not covered unless they resulted from an insured event.

Illegal driving

The payout may be reduced or withheld if the vehicle was driven while intoxicated, without a valid driving license, or in violation of important safety requirements.

The same applies if the incident was caused by a defect that would have been detected during a technical inspection.

Other common limitations

Damage to the vehicle interior; damage incurred during washing or repair; keys or documents left in the vehicle; undisclosed use for rental, ride-hailing, or driver training.

The specific exclusions are set out in the insurer’s terms and conditions – you can find them at the bottom of this page.

What is a deductible (excess)?

A deductible—also known as an excess—is the portion of the loss that you pay yourself for each insured event. The higher the deductible, the lower the cost of Casco insurance, and vice versa.

Fixed deduction

A specific amount is set—for example, €100, €200, or €300.

If the repair costs €1,000 and the deductible is €200, the insurer pays €800 and you pay €200 yourself.

Percentage deduction

A portion of the damage or the vehicle’s value is determined—for example, 10%. Such a deductible is often applied in cases of theft or total loss.

Some offers apply a combined deductible—for example, 5%, but no less than €150.

When does the deduction not apply?

Some insurers do not apply a deductible for collisions with animals, glass repair or replacement at a designated service center, damage caused by natural phenomena, or paintless bodywork.

See the comparison below to find out which insurers do not apply a deductible and in which cases.

In the “Man ramu” Casco calculator, you can compare different deductible options and their prices.

What determines the price of Casco insurance?

Each insurer calculates the cost of Casco insurance based on its own risk assessment model; therefore, quotes for the same vehicle can vary significantly.

Car

Make, model, year of manufacture and value, engine power, theft risk, cost of repairs and parts, anti-theft measures.

Drivers and usage

Age and driving experience of the youngest driver, claims history, place of residence, and purpose of vehicle use.

Selected conditions

Deductible amount, repair method, replacement vehicle, additional coverages, and payment method – a single payment or installments.

You will find out the exact price by entering your car’s details – the calculator will display offers from several insurers.

How do you compare Casco insurance offers?

Two Casco insurance policies with similar prices can differ significantly. Before making a choice, it is worth comparing not only the price but also the following terms:

Deduction

The portion of the loss you will pay yourself and when the deductible does not apply—such as for glass damage, collisions with animals, or natural phenomena.

Repair method

Whether the car is repaired at an insurer’s partner workshop, a workshop of your choice, or an official dealership, or a cash payout is made based on the repair estimate.

When choosing your own repair shop, the payout is often limited by the insurer’s cost estimate.

Replacement vehicle and roadside assistance

Is a replacement vehicle included, and for what duration—the entire repair period or a limited number of days? Does roadside assistance apply abroad as well?

Additional safeguards

Driver and passenger accidents, additional equipment, tires, refueling with the wrong fuel, loss of keys. The coverage limits for these items vary.

Car value and payout

In the event of theft or destruction, is the payout calculated based on market value or the value of a new car? Is depreciation applied to replacement parts, and at what vehicle age does this begin?

Territorial scope of validity

Check whether the insurance is valid in EU and EEA countries or throughout geographical Europe. This is important if you are traveling abroad by car.

When is it worth choosing Casco insurance?

Comprehensive insurance (Casco) is not mandatory, but in some cases, you risk incurring significant losses without it.

A new or more expensive car

The higher the value of the car, the more expensive its repair or loss becomes. In such cases, the cost of Casco insurance often represents only a small fraction of the potential loss.

Leasing or a loan

Leasing companies and banks usually require the financed vehicle to be covered by comprehensive insurance (Casco) for the entire duration of the financing.

Daily commute

If you need your car every day, it is not just repairs that matter, but also a replacement vehicle and roadside assistance. This is particularly important when driving in the city or traveling frequently.

Comprehensive insurance for other vehicles

In the Casco calculator, you can try to insure vehicles other than just passenger cars. However, not all insurers provide quotes for other types of vehicles, and some may not always agree to insure them.

Motorcycles and ATVs

Insurers take a more cautious approach to Casco insurance for motorcycles, mopeds, and quad bikes.

Trailers and caravans

Comprehensive insurance (Casco) is particularly relevant for camper vans, motorhomes, and other higher-value trailers.

Corporate vehicles and machinery

Separate solutions apply to corporate vehicle fleets, heavy-duty vehicles, and agricultural machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Casco Insurance

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Casco insurance, the deductible, repairs, and claims settlement.

Is Casco insurance mandatory?

No. In Lithuania, only civil liability insurance for vehicle owners is mandatory. Casco insurance is voluntary.

However, it is often required by leasing companies and banks financing the purchase of the car.

Yes. That is one of the key features of Casco insurance: it covers losses to your vehicle regardless of who caused the incident, provided the damage was not intentional and does not fall under the exclusions specified in the contract.

The payout is reduced by the amount of the selected deductible.

No. Compulsory civil liability insurance and Casco are two different policies. The former is required by law, whereas Casco is voluntary.

Some insurers offer them as a package, but legally they remain separate insurance products.

No, that is not required. You can have mandatory insurance with one company and Casco insurance with another.

When evaluating offers, it is worth comparing not only the price but also the terms of each contract.

No. Their start dates may differ. Compulsory insurance must be in effect whenever the vehicle is being driven, whereas the start date for Casco insurance is determined by the specific contract.

Not always. Insurers may apply restrictions or additional requirements regarding the vehicle’s age, value, make, model, modification, intended use, or origin.

Different terms, a higher deductible, or additional anti-theft requirements may apply to older or sports cars, as well as to vehicles that are frequently stolen, rented out, or used for ride-hailing services. It is also important to disclose if the vehicle was imported from the USA or another market.

Mostly yes. Many insurers apply Casco in EU and EEA countries or the entire geographical Europe, but some countries such as Russia and Belarus are usually excluded.

The exact territory is indicated in the insurance certificate and regulations, so it is worth checking it before the trip.

It depends on the chosen option: the car can be repaired at a service center belonging to the insurer’s partners or at a service center of your choice (such as an authorized dealership), or a cash payout can be made based on a repair estimate.

Do not start repairs until you have coordinated them with the insurer.

No. Casco is not a car warranty or maintenance insurance.

Typically, it does not cover normal wear and tear or breakdowns that did not result from an insured event. The specific exclusions depend on the particular contract.

The scope of roadside assistance depends on the insurer and the product. Some compulsory insurance offers include limited roadside assistance, whereas more extensive coverage may be included in Casco insurance or selected as an optional extra.

Therefore, it is worth checking the terms of both contracts.

Usually, yes – the payment can be made in installments, for example, on a monthly basis.

Installment payment terms and the final price depend on the insurer, so it is worth checking them in the offer.

Casco insurance is usually taken out for a period of one year.

If coverage is needed for a shorter period, it is worth checking the specific insurer’s options or opting for an annual contract paid in installments.

First, ensure safety, take photos of the damage and the scene of the incident, and report the event to your insurer within the timeframe specified in the contract. In cases of theft, vandalism, or injury, call the police.

Do not start repairs until you have coordinated them with the insurer. You can find more tips on the “In the event of an incident” page.
