The potholes on the roads are already gaping.
This winter has been full of cold, snow, and ice. However, as spring approaches, temperatures often reach above freezing during the day, and at night, the water on the roads freezes again. Such constant thaw-freeze cycles rapidly destroy asphalt surfaces, which is why drivers are increasingly faced with potholes.
Luckily, everything ends with a stronger blow and an unpleasant jolt, but often the consequences are more serious:
- a tire bursts, a rim cracks or deforms
- springs break, steering rods bend, shock absorbers are damaged
- the engine protection is torn off, the crankcase or other important systems are damaged.
In such cases, the journey usually ends here and now, and then you have to wonder – what to do next?
If the car is insured with CASCO insurance, the damage is usually compensated according to the terms of the contract. CASCO insurance usually also takes care of roadside assistance and transportation to the service station. Without CASCO, it is theoretically possible to seek compensation for damage from the road maintenance institution – on state roads this would be “Via Lietuva”, and on local roads – the relevant municipality. However, few can decide on this long and complicated process, which requires evidence, photos, police or other institution certificates.
Here are some tips on how to stay calm on the road right now:
- Choose a safe speed: a slower pace gives you more time to notice an obstacle and safely go around it.
- Greater distance: By keeping a greater distance than usual from the car in front of you, you will have a better view of the road ahead.
- Be careful of puddles: a deep hole may be hidden under the water, so if possible, avoid driving through larger puddles, especially on unfamiliar routes.
- Check your coverage: If you don’t already have car insurance, now is the perfect time to look into your options. It’s an investment in your peace of mind that pays off in just one unfortunate collision with a pothole.
