Travel insurance becomes mandatory when traveling to Georgia from 2026
If previously travel insurance when traveling to Georgia was only a recommended safety measure, from January 1, 2026 the situation is changing fundamentally. According to the Georgian Law on Tourism, travel medical expenses insurance (in case of illness and accident) becomes mandatory for all foreign tourists entering the country.

Without insurance, you risk being stuck behind the border or getting a fine

The new procedure provides for strict control already at the beginning of the trip. Airlines may ask to present a valid insurance policy before boarding the plane at Lithuanian airports. Failure to present the appropriate document may result in the traveler being denied boarding.
Crossing the border without insurance or if officers detect a violation inside the country carries sanctions of around 300 Georgian Lari (GEL), which is equivalent to around 100 euros. If the fine is not paid within 30 days, it can increase to 900 GEL.
What are the requirements for an insurance policy?
The insurance itself does not have to be anything exclusive, but it must meet specific criteria set by the Georgian government:
- Minimum amount: Insurance coverage for medical expenses must be at least 30,000 GEL (approximately 10,000–11,000 EUR). It should be noted that most Lithuanian insurance companies issue policies with a medical expense coverage of 100,000 EUR or more, therefore such coverage fully meets and exceeds the requirements of Georgia.
- Language: The policy must be submitted in English or Georgian.
- Format: Both paper (printed) and digital (PDF on phone) versions are valid, but experts recommend having a physical (printed) copy for security reasons.
- Validity period: The insurance must be valid for the entire period of stay, including both arrival and departure days.
- Risks: The policy must cover the costs of medical care (both in the event of illness and accidents).
Practical advice for those planning a trip to Georgia
- Choosing the policy validity territory: If you are choosing insurance directly, make sure whether Georgia is classified as a “Europe” zone or a “Worldwide” zone. When purchasing insurance on the Man Ramu insurance platform, the process is much simpler – after selecting the country of travel as Georgia, the platform automatically selects the appropriate region according to the requirements of insurance companies.
- Credit card insurance: If you use insurance provided by a bank card, be sure to have a certificate issued by the bank in English with you, showing the required limits.
- Security in the country: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania strongly recommends against traveling to regions not controlled by the Georgian government (Abkhazia and South Ossetia), as insurance coverage is usually not valid there and consular assistance is not possible.
Proper preparation is the key to a smooth and safe trip. To make your stay in this hospitable country worry-free, you can easily and conveniently purchase travel insurance to Georgia on the “Man ramu” insurance platform.
„Man ramu“ draudimo platformoje galite įsigyti kelionių draudimą, apimantį medicinines išlaidas, nelaimingus atsitikimus, asmens civilinę atsakomybę ir bagažo draudimą.
