Travel insurance becomes mandatory when traveling to Georgia from 2026
If previously a travel ban on going to Georgia was only a recommended security measure, from 2026 January 1 the situation is fundamentally changing. According to the Georgia Tourism Law, travel medical insurance (in case of illness and accidents) becomes mandatory for all foreign tourists entering the country.
Without insurance, you risk being stuck behind the border or getting a fine
The new procedure provides for strict control already at the beginning of the trip. Airlines may ask to present a valid insurance policy before boarding the plane at Lithuanian airports. Failure to present the appropriate document may result in the traveler being denied boarding.
Crossing the border without insurance or if officers detect a violation inside the country carries sanctions of around 300 Georgian Lari (GEL), which is equivalent to around 100 euros. If the fine is not paid within 30 days, it can increase to 900 GEL.
What are the requirements for an insurance policy?
The insurance itself does not have to be anything exclusive, but it must meet specific criteria set by the Georgian government:
- Minimum amount: Insurance coverage for medical expenses must be at least 30,000 GEL (approximately 10,000–11,000 EUR). It should be noted that most Lithuanian insurance companies issue policies with a medical expense coverage of 100,000 EUR or more, therefore such coverage fully meets and exceeds the requirements of Georgia.
- Language: The policy must also contain information in English or Georgian. Lithuanian insurance companies issue policies that, in addition to Lithuanian, provide all the necessary information in English, so these policies are fully compliant.
- Format: Both paper (printed) and digital (PDF on phone) versions are valid, but experts recommend having a physical (printed) copy for security reasons.
- Validity period: The insurance must be valid for the entire period of stay, including both arrival and departure days.
- Risks: The policy must cover the costs of medical care (both in the event of illness and accidents).

- Choosing the policy validity territory: If you are choosing insurance directly, make sure whether Georgia is assigned to the “Asia” zone or the “Worldwide” zone.
